Love and Reason

Love and Literature go hand in hand. Literature is the only thing that really can explain love. Love is a feeling that is so deeply rooted in language and how to express ones self using that language.
Such as in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. When Steven saw love the only way he could describe his feeling was with his descriptions of other things. Without expressions his search for love of the "Perfect Girl" is impossible. This is also a great description of how society shapes views of women. In his time, Steven's perfect girl was one of innocence and purity. This was hard to find in his time and as he so offenly referred to, seemed almost god like. Yet this was society's view of the perfect girl as well. Using his past experiences, Steven created this perfect girl in his mind. As opposed to today where the perfect girl is the hottest or the most beautiful. No matter how pure or innocent looks are what shape our society. This is also prevelent in our literature. Look at the ways of communication, and how looks shape that as well. You wont see an innocent looking girl playing in a stream on a magaziene cover. It will be the girl who looks the best at the time. Overall this gives us a shallow arrogant look at love. As people we miss out on the true things of life and we continue to miss the beauty life has to offer. This will continue to change and in 50 years the views on love will be different, but you can be that the liturature of the time will not be far behind.

My Big Question

How has society and literature shaped our views on love, and what love really is?
